Rural Transportation Options

Rural Transportation Options (RTO) is a committee comprised of individuals with an interest in addressing transportation issues in Haliburton County. It includes representation from the Haliburton Communities in Action Committee (CIA), the Haliburton chapter of the Canadian Association for Retired Persons (CARP), Environment Haliburton (EH!), the Ontario Healthy Communities Coalition (OHCC) and concerned citizens.

In 2010, Environment Haliburton! held a forum to discuss transportation alternatives to private car ownership. RTO was then formed to carry out several research projects which can be found at - under the "Haliburton County Collection" (use the keyword 'Transportation' in your search).

Drawing on this research, the experiences of other rural communities and our local culture, RTO determined that the best way to start providing more transportation options in the county would be to formalize ridesharing through a website. In the fall of 2014, RTO became a part of the Haliburton County Community Cooperative. A website is in development. Many thanks to the numerous organizations and individuals for their past and on-going support of this work.
